Technical Communications:

One of the most important roles of the program or project manager is to proactively foster good communication amongst the members of the project team, with senior management, and also with customers and suppliers.   In my experience, this is one of the most important skills that distinguishes successful projects from those that are less successful or fail.

Hirsch, Herbert L. The Essence of Technical Communication for Engineers. Piscataway, New Jersey: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2000.

This is a short (89 pages) book written by an experienced engineer to provide an easy to apply guide concerning writing, presentation, and meeting or interacting skills. The author's goal is to convince you that communication is both easy and fun. He emphasizes the value of planning, the importance of a good attitude, and how to execute. He recommends three powerful principles or tools to facilitate effective communication: (1) Connection - connecting what we have to what a reader, audience, or listener needs or wants; (2) Flow - making our communications smooth, enjoyable, and comfortable; and (3) Reinforcement - providing convincing details. The book is about applying these three principles to the written document, to presentations, and to informal discussions. I especially appreciated Hirsch's emphasis on enjoying the experience of writing. This attitude allows us to overcome the conditions in which we need to write but just can't seem to get going: "writer's block" (pp. 20-22). A very detailed index is provided, enabling a reader to find topics easily.
